Heya Folx,
It's time to respond, time to passiton... I've been requestin' politely for years now... if y'aven't read, agreed (heaven forbid), or passed-on past rants linx and concerns expressed herein...
Please consider allowing yourself to Believe Al Gore and Msr. diCaprio... and more immediately, personally-- PLEASE CONSIDER that the current economic crisis is about Even More than bunk mortgages and casino capitalism on Wall St... it's certainly "about" those things... but it's linked to much more... and it's going to get much more extreme as our world now enters a period of ongoing decrease in worldwide oil supplies to coincide with increasing global demand.
Shifting to solar/wind/biofuels etc. is important, and will be necessary to any success in transition... but the transition will be Much Bigger than most in the mainstream dare admit... and includes a mandatory shift to a no-growth economy... by "mandatory" I don't mean "should", "if-only", "oh-please-everybody-shift-so-we-can-save-the-planet"... no. That's not it. Mandatory, as-in our capacity for a constantly-growing economy and worldview has limits-- our culture overstepped them Many Years back and've been living on momentum and Oil Wars and Economic HitMen and Phantom Production/ Capacity (see John Perkins' "Confessions of an Economic Hit Man" and William Catton's "Overshoot" for thorough analysis of a coulple of these points)... but the end is not a negotiable, or moral, issue. We're going to run out, sooner and with more extreme results than most currently dare admit.
This "Economic Downturn" is just one among many recent Very Visible symptoms of Much More coming, Soon. We should work together once we've admitted it's Actually Already Happening, and Will Be Extreme-- to an unprecedented degree.
If you don't believe it can, please consider this reminder/ reality: Civilizations Collapse. All Ever, Have. Nearly None Believed they would/ could. They All thought they were special, an exception. The American Global Empire is not an exception-- except that it is global in scale, and the resources fueling it (literally) are dwindling-- globally.
Please pass this on-- please respond/ comment... please READ the link this text refers to: "Peak Oil: Collapse".

PS This was never, is still not about the capacity to say (or howl) "I told you so"... this scenario won't be "fun", or status-quo, for anyone... There will be little satisfaction or relief in "I told you so"... the only relief or strategy for effective navigation of this future (our future) is to come together as community in Recognition of this Reality, this future (our future)... so if you're onboard, have any suggestions, comments, anything to contribute... or at least (again) if you could please pass this on to any/ all you think might respond with any interest, effectiveness... please do so. Thanks humbly, ZMD

Check out the shiny new link:
"Rollo May, The Human Dilemma".
It's an interview. Here's a quick highlight exerpt:
"MISHLOVE: I know that some of the existentialist philosophers, such as Camus and Sartre and perhaps even Genet, made quite a bit out of the idea of rebelling against the conventional mores of society. I sense that what you're saying is that genuine mysticism has to also involve this kind of cutting-edge rebellion against the herd instincts.
MAY: Yes, it does. It's a rebellion against the herd instinct. Sartre was very important in this movement of the rebel. Camus wrote the book The Rebel. And Paul Tillich, who was my dear and very close friend for some thirty years, he and the others of the existentialists understood that joy and freedom come only from the facing of life, the confronting of the difficulties."

Two new links on the crucial topic of education.
Not the usual...
"Sudbury" and "K. Education/ Significance of Life" links-- read as much as you can of 'em... worth reading.
A quick sample from the opening of chapter 3 in Krishnamurti's book, "Education and the Significance of Life":
"MANY of us seem to think that by teaching every human being to read and write, we shall solve our human problems; but this idea has proved to be false. The so-called educated are not peace-loving, integrated people, and they too are responsible for the confusion and misery of the world.
The right kind of education means the awakening of intelligence, the fostering of an integrated life, and only such education can create a new culture and a peaceful world; but to bring about this new kind of education, we must make a fresh start on an entirely different basis."

HOWWWL!
MSNBC reports that scientists have confirmed: CO2 emissions must CEASE ALTOGETHER if humanity is serious about averting possibly hundreds of years of extreme climate shift, with likely Very Serious Consequences...
Hmmmmm....
Is our culture ready... capable... of such a drastic shift? I have my doubts. But if so, EACH OF US must enact this shift.
EACH OF US is responsible, 100%.
